A Tortoise's Tale from the Galápagos
Hi there! My name is Galápagos Tortoise, and I’m one of the biggest tortoises in the whole world! I live on a special group of islands called the Galápagos Islands. My shell is like a big, bony backpack that I carry everywhere. It is my home and my shield, keeping me safe. I move very, very slowly because I like to take my time and enjoy the sunshine. What’s the rush? My ancestors have been living here for a very long time, long before people knew these islands existed. In fact, the first sailors from far away spotted my island home on March 10th, 1535. They were so amazed when they saw all of my tortoise relatives wandering around that they decided to name the islands after us! It makes me proud to know our home carries our name.
Many years later, one of the most exciting things that ever happened was a visit from a very curious human. His name was Charles Darwin, and he sailed all the way to my island home in the year 1835. He was a scientist who loved to look closely at animals and plants. He spent a lot of time observing me and my tortoise cousins. He noticed something very interesting about us! He saw that my cousins on different islands had slightly different shells. Some of my relatives had shells that were round like a dome, while others had shells that were shaped like a saddle you'd put on a horse. Seeing how we were all a little different helped him come up with a super important idea about how animals slowly change over many, many years to fit into their homes perfectly.
I have a very peaceful and slow life, and I like it that way. My favorite things to do are munch on yummy cactus pads and other green plants that grow on the islands. After a good meal, I love to find a sunny spot and warm my big shell in the sunshine. I can live to be over 100 years old! That means I get to see many sunny seasons come and go. But for a while, life became a little bit harder for us. New animals and more people arrived on the islands. It was a worrying time for all the tortoises because our homes and the plants we eat became scarce.
But I have some wonderful news to share! People realized how special my tortoise family is. So, in 1959, they created the Galápagos National Park to protect us and our home. Now, scientists and friends from all over the world help keep my island home safe for me and all the other animals. I have a very important job here. You could say I'm like a gardener for the islands! As I munch on fruits and wander around, I spread seeds in my poop. This helps new plants and trees grow all over. I help keep my island home beautiful and green for everyone, and I am so proud to be a Galápagos Tortoise.
