A Gorilla's Day in the Forest

Hello! I am a Western Lowland Gorilla, and I want to tell you about my life. I live in a big, beautiful forest full of tall trees and yummy plants. Look at my arms! They are very strong, which is perfect for climbing and swinging. My body is covered in coarse black hair, except for my face, ears, hands, and feet, which are hairless. I am never lonely because I live with my family. We are called a troop, and we do everything together. It is wonderful to wake up every morning and see my whole family right there with me.

Every day with my troop is so much fun. Our family is led by a very big and strong gorilla. He is called a silverback because the hair on his back is a beautiful silver color. He looks after all of us and makes sure we are safe. When I get hungry, I look for my favorite foods. I love to eat sweet, juicy fruits that drip down my chin. I also munch on tasty green leaves that are all around our forest home. After my belly is full, it's time to play with my siblings! We chase each other, tumble in the soft leaves, and climb on low branches. Sometimes, I stand up tall and make a soft chest-thump sound. It's not a loud sound, just a gentle thump-thump to show I am feeling playful and happy.

I have a very important job in my forest home. I am like a forest gardener! When I eat delicious fruits, I swallow the little seeds inside. Later, when I travel through the forest, those seeds come out and fall onto the ground. A brand new tree can grow from each little seed! By spreading seeds all over, I help new trees sprout and make the forest bigger and greener. This helps keep the rainforest healthy and beautiful. It makes a wonderful home for me and all the other animals that live here.
