A Harbor Seal's Splashy Day

Hello. I am a friendly harbor seal. My coat is spotty, just like a banana with brown spots. I was born on a tidal sandbar, rocky reef, or pocket beach. On my very first day, my mom taught me how to swim in the big, blue water. It was so much fun. On the land, I wiggle on my belly to move around. But when I splash into the ocean, I feel like a superhero. I can twist and turn and glide through the water so fast.

I love swimming in the chilly ocean. It feels so good on my skin. When I get hungry, I use my super-sensitive whiskers to find yummy fish to eat. My whiskers tickle and help me feel where the fish are hiding, even when the water is dark and murky. I am a very playful swimmer. I zip and zoom and dive deep down to catch my lunch. It is like a game of tag. I can hold my breath for a very long time, so I can explore all the amazing things under the sea before I come up for air.

After a long swim and a full belly, my favorite thing to do is take a nap. I pull myself out of the water and onto a big, flat rock. We call this “hauling out.” I love to lie in the warm sun with all of my seal friends. We rest side-by-side in groups but usually maintain personal space and avoid physical contact. It is so peaceful. By keeping our oceans clean, you help me and my friends have a safe place to swim and a sunny spot to rest. A clean home helps us stay happy and healthy.
