Splash! A Harbor Seal's Story
Hi there! My name is Splash, and I'm a harbor seal. Some people also call me a common seal. I have a beautiful coat of short, thick fur that is covered in special spots. Every single harbor seal has a different pattern, which makes each of us unique, just like you! I live along the rocky coasts and sandy beaches of the big, cool oceans in the Northern Hemisphere. If you look at my head, you won't see any ear flaps like a dog has. Instead, I have little ear holes that close up tight when I go for a swim, which keeps the water out.
I was born on land, ice, or in the water near shore, typically between February and July, depending on the region. It was so exciting to see the world for the first time! Just a few hours after I was born, I was already splashing around in the cool ocean water. My mom fed me super-rich milk that was full of nutrients, and it helped me grow strong and chubby very quickly. For about a month, I stayed very close to her. Harbor seal mothers are highly attentive and form strong bonds with their pups, engaging in frequent interactions that are crucial for the pup's survival, like how to be a great swimmer and how to find yummy fish to eat.
When I'm not busy swimming, my favorite thing to do is 'haul-out' of the water. That's a special word we seals use when we wiggle onto a sunny rock or a warm beach to rest and soak up the sun with my friends. It's like having a big seal picnic! When I get hungry and go hunting, I use my amazing whiskers to feel for fish swimming by, even when the water is dark. I can also hold my breath for a long time, which allows me to explore deep down in the ocean for a tasty meal.
I am so happy that people decided to help protect my family and me. In the United States, a special rule called the Marine Mammal Protection Act was made in 1972 to keep us safe. I have a big job in the ocean. By eating fish, I help keep the ocean balanced and healthy for all the other animals. I am a special part of the big blue world, and I love sharing it with all the other amazing sea creatures. My story is a reminder of how important every animal is to our wonderful planet.
