The Garden Guardian
Hello, I am a praying mantis. I have a very special name because of my front legs. I hold them together, and it looks like I am praying. I have two big eyes that help me see all around. In the springtime, I hatched from a cozy egg case with all of my brothers and sisters. We were all so tiny. It was exciting to see the big, green world for the first time. We all wiggled out and were ready for an adventure in the garden.
I am a super helper in the garden. I have a special trick. I can turn my head almost all the way around without moving my body. This helps me look for yummy snacks to eat. I love to eat the little bugs, like aphids, that try to nibble on the plants. This is how I help the garden stay healthy. My front legs are super fast, which helps me catch my food. I am also very good at hiding. Sometimes I look just like a green leaf, and other times I look like a brown stick. This is called camouflage, and it keeps me safe from big birds that might want to eat me.
My most important job is to be a garden guardian. By eating a variety of insects, including both pests and beneficial species, I can impact garden ecosystems in complex ways. I work hard all summer, feeding on a variety of insects, which can influence garden ecosystems in multiple ways. I only live until the weather gets cold in the autumn. But my story does not end there. Before the winter comes, a new egg case is laid, and next spring, new little mantises just like me will hatch. They will become the garden's new guardians and continue the important work of helping the plants grow.
