My Name is Anne

Hello, I'm Anne! I want to tell you my story. I had a happy family with my papa, Otto, my mama, Edith, and my big sister, Margot. We loved each other very much. For my thirteenth birthday, on June 12th, 1942, I got the best present ever. It was a diary! I decided to name my diary Kitty. She was my best friend, and I told her all of my secrets.

Soon after my birthday, my family and I had to go to a secret hiding place to stay safe. It was a special little home hidden behind a big bookshelf in my papa's office. We called it the Secret Annex. We had to be very, very quiet, like little mice, so no one would know we were there. It was like a long game of hide-and-seek. Another family came to live with us, and we all shared our little home together, helping each other every day.

Living in our secret home, I missed playing outside in the sunshine and feeling the wind on my face. But I was never lonely because I had my best friend, Kitty. Every single day, I wrote to her in my diary. I told her about what I was thinking and feeling. I wrote about all my big dreams for when I could go outside again. My biggest dream was to become a famous writer and share my stories with the world.

It was a very sad time, and one day our hiding place was found. But my story wasn't over. My dear papa saved my diary, and he shared my words with everyone. Even though I am not here anymore, my diary, Kitty, lets my voice fly free like a little bird. My words remind everyone to believe in good things and to always be kind to one another. And that makes me very happy, knowing my dream came true.
