George Washington

Hello there. My name is George Washington, and I want to tell you my story. I grew up a long time ago on a big farm in a place called Virginia. It was one of the thirteen colonies that belonged to Great Britain. As a boy, I loved being outside more than anything. I would ride my horse all over the fields and explore the deep, green woods near my home. I wasn't a big fan of sitting in a classroom, but I knew learning was important. One of my favorite things to learn was math. It helped me get a very special job when I was a teenager. I became a surveyor. That's a fancy word for someone who measures land and draws maps. This job was a grand adventure. I traveled far into the wilderness, camping under the stars and learning all about the beautiful land that would one day become a new country. It was hard work, but it taught me to be strong and to solve problems on my own.

As I grew older, the people in the thirteen colonies started to feel like they wanted to make their own rules. We were living so far away from the King of Great Britain, King George III, and we believed we should be in charge of our own lives. We wanted freedom. The colonies decided to work together to become a new country, the United States of America. But to do that, we had to fight a war called the Revolutionary War, which started in 1775. The leaders of the colonies asked me to be the general of our army, the Continental Army. I said, 'Yes, I will lead our soldiers.' It was a very difficult job. Our army was small, and our soldiers were not trained like the British soldiers. We had many hard times. I'll never forget the freezing winter we spent at a place called Valley Forge. My soldiers were hungry and cold, but we never gave up. We believed in what we were fighting for. We knew that if we worked together, we could win our freedom.

And we did. After many long years, the war ended in 1783, and we had won. Our dream of a new, free country was real. After the war, I helped other leaders write the rules for our new nation. We called these rules the Constitution. Then, something amazing happened. In 1789, the people of the United States chose me to be their very first president. I was so surprised and honored. It was my job to help our young country get off to a good start, like a captain steering a new ship. I served as president for eight years, working hard to make our nation strong and fair. When my time was over, I was happy to go back to my home, Mount Vernon, and live with my wife, Martha. People started calling me the 'Father of His Country,' and that makes me very proud. I am proud because I was able to help build a nation where people could live freely and chase their own dreams.
