Moctezuma and the City on the Lake

Hello, my little friend. My name is Moctezuma. I was a leader, like a king, for my people, the Aztecs. We lived a long, long time ago in a magical city. Our city was called Tenochtitlan, and it was built right on top of a big, sparkly lake. Imagine that. Boats would float by like little ducks, and the sun would make the water dance with light. It was my job to help everyone and make sure our home was safe and happy. I loved my city so much. It was the most beautiful place in the whole world.

Our city was full of amazing things to see. We had tall, tall buildings called pyramids that reached up to the clouds. They were like big stone mountains we built ourselves. We had busy markets with so many colors. You could find bright feathers and shiny stones. And oh, the yummy smells. We loved to drink a special chocolate drink. It was a treat for kings. In our gardens, bright parrots with red and blue feathers would sing songs in the trees. We even had strong, spotted jaguars who were our special friends. Everyone worked together. We planted food, built our homes, and sang songs. Our city was a happy place because we all helped each other. It was a wonderful home full of life and joy.

One day, in the year 1519, some visitors came. They came from far away, across the big, blue ocean. Their ships looked like giant birds floating on the water. At first, we were curious, but soon things began to change. It became a sad time for my people, and it was hard for everyone. My time as a leader came to an end. But even though our city changed, the story of my people is still told. People remember our beautiful home on the lake, our tall pyramids, and our brave hearts. The spirit of our great city, Tenochtitlan, lives on forever.
