Moctezuma II: Leader of the Aztecs

A City on the Water

Hello, my name is Moctezuma, and I was the leader of the great Aztec people. My title was Huey Tlatoani, which means Great Speaker. I lived in the most amazing city you could ever imagine, called Tenochtitlan. Our city was built right on a lake, like a magical island connected by bridges. We even had floating gardens, called chinampas, where we grew colorful flowers and yummy food. Everywhere you looked, you could see tall, pointy temples that seemed to touch the clouds. They were painted bright colors, and from the top, you could see our whole city sparkling on the water. It was truly a sight to behold. I spent my childhood learning how to be a strong warrior and a wise priest. I studied the stars and learned about our gods. I worked very hard because I wanted to be a good leader for my people. When I was finally chosen to be the Huey Tlatoani, my heart was filled with so much pride. I promised I would always protect our beautiful city and everyone who lived in it. It was the most important job in the whole world, and I was ready for it.

Life as the Huey Tlatoani

Being the Huey Tlatoani was a very busy job, but I loved it. I lived in a giant palace with big, open rooms and beautiful gardens. My gardens were filled with sweet-smelling flowers and trees from all over our empire. I even had a special zoo with jaguars, eagles, and colorful parrots that chattered all day long. One of my most important duties was leading ceremonies to honor our gods. We would wear fancy clothes made of bright feathers and sing songs to thank them for the sun, the rain, and the food we ate. I also had to make sure our empire was running smoothly. I would meet with leaders from other cities to make sure everyone had enough food and that our roads were safe. I wanted all my people to be happy and healthy. I loved walking through our busy markets. You could find almost anything there. People sold shiny jewels, soft cotton blankets, delicious chocolate, and bright green feathers from the quetzal bird. The market was loud and full of energy, and it always reminded me how wonderful and strong our people were.

Visitors from the Sea

One day, in the year 1519, something happened that changed everything. Messengers ran to me with news of strange visitors who had arrived on our shores. They came in giant ships that looked like floating houses with big white wings. Their leader was a man named Hernán Cortés. He and his men wore shiny metal clothes that gleamed in the sun, and they had animals we had never seen before, which they called horses. At first, we were very curious. We thought maybe they were sent by our gods, so we welcomed them into our amazing city of Tenochtitlan. I gave them gifts of gold and feathers to show our friendship. But soon, things became very difficult and confusing. They wanted our gold and wanted us to change our ways. There was a lot of sadness and fighting. My time as a ruler ended during this great change. I passed away, but I want you to always remember the greatness of my city and the strength of the Aztec people. Our culture, our stories, and our spirit live on today in the heart of Mexico.
