The Story of Tecumseh
Hello, my name is Tecumseh. My name means ‘Shooting Star.’ I think that is a wonderful name. A long, long time ago, around the year 1768, I was born in a beautiful forest. My home was full of tall trees and singing birds. I was part of the Shawnee people, and we were like one big family. I loved to play with my brother, Tenskwatawa. We would run through the woods and listen to the whispers of the wind. We would splash in the cool, clear river on sunny days. The forest was our playground and our friend. I loved my home very much. I loved my people very much. My heart was happy when I was with them.
As I grew up, I saw that my people were sometimes sad. Our friends in other tribes were sad, too. Their homes were in danger, and that made everyone feel worried. I thought and thought about how I could help. Then, I had a big idea. It was a very big idea. What if all the tribes joined together. What if we all held hands and became one giant family. A big family is strong. A big family can help each other and keep everyone safe. So, I went on a long journey. I walked to many different villages to share my idea. I told everyone, 'Let’s be friends. Let’s work together.'.
Even though I am not here anymore, my dream lives on. My dream of people helping and respecting each other is still very important. Being a good friend is the best thing you can be. Taking care of our homes, like the big, green earth, is a good idea for everyone. When you are kind and you share with others, you are helping my dream stay alive. Remember to always be a helper and a friend. That is how we make the world a happy place for all.
