The Power of Plus
Have you ever gathered all your favorite toys in one big pile? Or counted the cookies on a plate after your friend added a few more? That feeling of things coming together, of growing into a bigger, happier group—that’s me! I’m the magic that happens when one thing joins another. Before you even knew my name, you knew what I could do. You felt me when you put two blocks on top of two more blocks and suddenly had a tall tower. You heard me in the rhythm when you clapped your hands once, and then twice more. I don't make a sound, but I help you see how the world grows. For a long, long time, people just knew me as 'more.' But I have a proper name, and I’m so excited to share it with you. Hello! I am Addition.
For thousands of years, people felt my presence but didn't have a special way to write me down. Early humans would gather pebbles or scratch marks on a piece of bone to keep track of things. One scratch plus another scratch meant they had two of something. Can you imagine trying to count all the stars that way? One of the oldest examples of this is a special tool called the Ishango Bone, found in Africa. It's over 20,000 years old and is covered in little notches, showing that people were already using me to group numbers together! As people built big cities in places like ancient Egypt and Babylon, they needed me more than ever. How many bricks do you need to build a giant pyramid? How much grain did you harvest from the fields? I helped them figure it all out. They had their own clever symbols for numbers and for putting them together. But something was missing: a simple, easy sign for me. For a long time, people would just write the word 'and' or 'et,' which is 'and' in a language called Latin. It worked, but it was a bit slow. Then, on a very important day in 1489 CE, a German mathematician named Johannes Widmann decided I deserved my own special symbol. He was writing a book about math for merchants and used a little cross to show when things were being added. And so, the plus sign (+) was born! It was like getting my own signature. Suddenly, it was so much easier for people everywhere to call on me for help. I felt so proud!
Today, you can find me everywhere! I’m there when you add up your score to win a video game, when you follow a recipe that says to add two cups of flour to one cup of sugar, or when you combine your allowance with your birthday money to buy something amazing. I help scientists add up their data to make new discoveries about our planet, and I help engineers add up measurements to build strong bridges and soaring skyscrapers. But I’m not just about numbers on a page; I am about bringing things together in wonderful ways. I am the teamwork when you and your friends join forces to build a fort. I am the harmony when different musical notes are added together to create a beautiful song. Every time you share something, build something, or create something bigger than what you started with, you are using my power. I help you see that small things can become great when they are combined. So the next time you put two and two together, remember me, Addition, and know that you are part of a wonderful story of growth and connection that started thousands of years ago.
