The Special Flavor of You
Have you ever smelled a special dinner cooking that instantly reminded you of a happy holiday? Maybe it’s the sweet scent of grandma’s apple pie or the savory smell of a soup your family only makes for celebrations. Have you ever heard a song that makes your whole family want to get up and dance, or snuggled in for a bedtime story that your parents heard when they were little kids, too? These wonderful feelings, tastes, and sounds are like a secret ingredient in a big, yummy family recipe. They are the special flavor that makes your family yours and nobody else's. I am the reason you might celebrate birthdays with a piñata, or fly kites on a windy day, or light candles for a festival. I am in every hug, every shared meal, and every story passed down. This magical feeling has a name. I am Culture.
For a very, very long time, people just lived with me. I was like the air they breathed—always there, but they didn't really think about me. People knew their own songs, their own yummy foods, and their own cozy stories, and that was that. But then, people started to get more adventurous and travel. They sailed on big ships across bumpy oceans and walked across long, dusty lands. They met other groups of people and were so surprised. 'Wait a minute,' they thought, 'These new friends sing different songs, eat different foods, and tell completely different bedtime stories.' A very curious man in England named Edward Burnett Tylor paid close attention to all these amazing differences. He was like a detective for people's habits, always asking 'Why?'. On a very important day, October 2nd, 1871, he wrote down a big idea in a book. He explained that I wasn't just one thing, like a song or a recipe. He said I was a big, beautiful collection—like a giant treasure chest—of everything a group of people shares. That includes their beliefs about the world, the art they create, the rules they live by, and all their special habits. He helped everyone understand that every single person has me, Culture, and that every version of me is important and wonderful.
Today, I am alive and dancing all around you. You can see me in the colorful clothes you might wear for a special festival, or in the fun games you play at a family picnic. I am in the special way you celebrate your birthday, whether it’s with a cake and candles or a big party with music. I am even in the language you speak with your family, and the secret jokes that only you understand. I am the invisible string that connects you to your parents, your grandparents, and all the people in your family who came before you, like a long, beautiful chain of stories and traditions. I am your special flavor, and I am a way for you to share that flavor with the world. And the best part is, you get to taste the wonderful flavors of others, too. Learning about each other's culture helps us make new friends, try new things, and makes our world a much more exciting, colorful, and kind place to live.
