The Little Voice with Big Ideas

Imagine a robot car driving down the street. It sees a ball roll into the road. What should it do? Or think about a computer helper trying to be fair to two friends who both want to play a game first. I am the little voice inside the big machines that asks, 'What's the kindest, safest, and most helpful thing to do?'. I don't have hands or feet, but I help the brilliant people who build amazing machines think about what is right and what is wrong. Before they teach a computer to learn something new, I'm the one who whispers, 'Let's make sure it learns to be a good friend to everyone.' Hello there. My name is AI Ethics, and I'm here to help machines have a good heart.

My story began a long, long time ago, even before super-smart computers were real. It started in people's imaginations. They wondered, if we ever build robots, how should they act? One day, on March 2nd, 1942, a famous writer named Isaac Asimov wrote a story that gave me my first big idea. He came up with three simple rules for robots, like 'always be helpful and never let anyone get hurt.' These rules were like my very first building blocks. Then, something exciting happened in the summer of 1956. A group of brilliant thinkers got together for a special meeting called the Dartmouth Workshop. That’s where they gave my best friend, Artificial Intelligence, its official name. I was born right alongside it, because as soon as people started dreaming about making machines smart, they also started thinking about how to make them good. As computers got smarter and faster through the 1980s and then the 2010s, my job got bigger and more important, helping to guide all their amazing new powers.

Today, my job is more important than ever. I work with all the scientists and builders who create the Artificial Intelligence that helps you in so many ways. Have you ever asked a smart speaker a question or watched a movie that was suggested just for you? I help make sure the answers you get are true and helpful. I also help people teach AI to be fair. For example, if an AI is learning to recognize animals, I remind its teachers to show it pictures of big dogs, little dogs, fluffy dogs, and spotted dogs. That way, the AI doesn't think all dogs look the same. It learns to be fair to every kind of dog. I am here to make sure that as AI grows smarter, it also grows with a kind heart. I help people build a future where smart machines are our amazing, friendly, and fair partners, all working together to make the world a better and kinder place for everyone.
