Have you ever felt a warm, happy feeling all over. It’s like getting the biggest, coziest hug from someone you love. It’s the sound of giggles when you share a yummy snack with a friend. I am the fun of building a tall, tall tower of blocks together. I am there when everyone holds hands and sings a happy song. This special, warm feeling is me. I am the wonderful feeling of being together with people who care. I am Community.

Long, long, long ago, people learned a big secret. It was very hard to be all alone. It was tricky to find yummy berries to eat or to build a warm place to sleep by yourself. But then, they discovered me. They learned that when they stayed together, everything was better. They could help each other find food. They could build cozy homes together to stay safe and warm from the wind. At night, they would sit around a bright, crackling fire, telling stories and singing songs. Being together made them strong and happy. That’s when people knew I was the best feeling in the world.

I am all around you today. I am in your family when you have dinner together and share stories about your day. I am in your classroom when you and your friends learn and play. When you go to the park, I am there with all the children running and laughing on the playground. I am there when your neighbors wave hello and smile. I help everyone feel like they belong. Being a part of me, a community, helps make the whole world a kinder and happier place for you, and for me, and for everyone.
