The Earth's Great Puzzle
Hello there! Can you guess who I am? I have huge, dry patches where the sun warms my sandy deserts and tall, pointy bits that get covered in sparkly snow. I also have vast, deep, splashy parts where my waves tickle the shore. You can build sandcastles on me, climb my rocky mountains, and sail your boats across my blue waters. I am your home, a giant puzzle of land and water. I am the Earth’s Continents and Oceans!
For a very long time, people only knew the little piece of me they lived on. The rest was a big mystery! Brave explorers set sail in wooden ships, curious about what lay beyond the horizon. They drew maps of my shores, but they didn't have the whole picture. They didn't know that a long, long time ago, all my land pieces were snuggled together in one giant supercontinent! A smart scientist named Alfred Wegener gave it the name Pangaea, which means 'all lands.' On January 6th, 1912, he shared a wonderful idea. He thought that my continents were not stuck in one place. Instead, they drifted apart very, very slowly over millions of years, like crackers floating in a big bowl of soup. At first, some people didn't believe him, but he was like a detective, finding clues in rocks and fossils that showed my pieces once fit together perfectly. He was right! That slow dance is how my seven continents—Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America—and my five big oceans—the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, and Southern—moved to where they are today.
Knowing about me helps you see the whole world! Maps show you where everything is, from the hot jungles of South America to the icy plains of Antarctica. You can learn about all the different animals, plants, and people that live on my different parts. Even though my oceans seem to separate us, they actually connect us. Boats, planes, and even messages travel across me every day, bringing people and ideas together. I am your one big, beautiful home. By exploring my lands and seas, you learn about each other and discover how we can all work together to take care of our amazing planet.
