The World's Crayon Box
Have you ever looked inside a box of crayons? There are so many colors! Bright reds, sunny yellows, deep blues, and gentle greens. What if all the crayons were the same color? Your drawings wouldn't be as exciting, would they? I'm a little like that box of crayons. I am the wonderful feeling you get when you see a garden full of different flowers, or when you hear a song played by many different instruments. I am the magic that happens when lots of unique people, with their own ideas, stories, and ways of life, come together. Hello! I am Diversity and Inclusion, and I help make the world a more beautiful and interesting place for everyone.
For a long time, some people didn't understand how wonderful I am. They thought it was better if everyone looked, thought, and acted the same. They drew pictures using only one or two colors and left the other crayons in the box. But brave people knew that wasn't right. A kind man named Martin Luther King Jr. had a big dream. On August 28th, 1963, he told everyone about his dream that one day, people would be friends no matter the color of their skin. People listened and started working together to make his dream come true. On July 2nd, 1964, they made a very important rule called the Civil Rights Act, which said that everyone in America had to be treated fairly. People also realized that it wasn't just about skin color. It was about welcoming boys and girls, people who speak different languages, and people whose bodies and minds work in different ways. They learned that including everyone makes our team, our school, and our world stronger.
Today, you can see me everywhere! I'm in the yummy foods from all over the world that you can try. I'm in the different holidays your friends celebrate and the amazing stories they tell. When you and your friends use all your different ideas to build a super tall tower of blocks, that's me helping you! I am the promise that every single person is special and has something important to add to our world's picture. You are a unique and wonderful color in our giant crayon box. By being kind, listening to others, and sharing your own special sparkle, you help me grow and make our world's drawing more colorful every single day.
