The Story of Your Feelings

Do you ever feel a happy wiggle inside when you see your favorite person. Or maybe a big, heavy feeling when a friend says something unkind. Sometimes I make your tummy feel like it has tiny butterflies fluttering around, and other times I make big, salty tears roll down your cheeks. I am with you all the time, even when you are sleeping. I am always here to help you. Hello. I am your Emotions.

I am not just one thing. I am like a whole box of colorful crayons. I am the sunny yellow of happiness when you build the tallest block tower ever. I am the stormy blue of sadness when your ice cream falls on the ground. Splat. I can be the fiery red of anger when someone will not share a toy, or the shaky purple of fear during a loud thunderstorm. Boom. Everyone in the whole wide world has these colors inside them. A long, long time ago, a smart person named Charles Darwin wrote a whole book about me. On November 26th, 1872, he shared his ideas, noticing that people and even fluffy puppies and kittens show me on their faces.

My colors are your superpowers. They really are. They help you understand what you need and what your friends need, too. Feeling sad and blue helps you know it is time for a warm, cozy hug. Feeling happy and yellow helps you laugh and share your joy with everyone. Feeling angry and red helps you use your big-kid voice to say, 'Please stop.' I am here to help you learn about yourself and be a good friend to others. Listening to all your feelings is a wonderful way to grow big and strong inside.
