The World's Biggest Hug

Have you ever thrown a bright, bouncy ball up into the air. Whee, it goes up. Then whoosh, it comes right back down to you. That’s me. I am a gentle, invisible hug. I pull your ball back to the ground so you can catch it. When you pour yummy juice into a cup, I make sure it stays inside. I keep the water in the bathtub so you can splash and play. I hold your little feet on the floor so you can run and jump and dance all day long. You can’t see me, but I am always there, pulling things down, down, down in a soft, gentle way. I am Gravity.

For a long, long time, people didn't know my name. Then one day, a very curious man named Isaac Newton was sitting under a big, green apple tree. It was a sunny day, a long, long time ago in the year 1666. Plop. A red apple fell from a branch and landed on the soft grass. Isaac wondered, why did the apple fall down. Why didn't it fall up into the sky. Or sideways. He thought and thought. He realized it was me. I was the one pulling the apple gently toward the big, round Earth. I wasn't just hugging the apple. I was hugging the whole tree. I even hug the big, bright Moon and keep it close to the Earth so it can shine for you at night.

I'm always here to help you, every single day. When you sleep in your cozy bed at night, I keep you tucked in so you don't float away into the air. When you go to the playground and climb up the ladder, I am ready to help you slide down. Whee. That’s me helping you have fun. I am a constant, invisible helper for everyone and everything. I give the whole world a big, gentle hug to keep all the people, animals, and houses safe and in their special place. I am always here for you.
