A Number's Secret Power

Do you know how to count. One, two, three. Of course you do. But what if you had to count something super big, like all the colorful leaves on a tree or all the sparkly grains of sand on a beach. That sounds tricky. I have a secret power that helps with that. I give every number a special home, a spot where it can be little or super, super big. A 2 can be just two little teddy bears. Or it can be much, much more. It all depends on where it sits in a line. Guess who I am. I am Place Value.

Let me show you how I work. Imagine a little house with different rooms for numbers. There’s a ones room on the right, a tens room right next to it, and a hundreds room next to that. If the number 3 is in the ones room, it’s just three little ladybugs crawling on a leaf. But if that same number 3 moves into the tens room, poof. It becomes thirty ladybugs flying all around. It’s the same number, but its special place gives it a bigger job. A long, long time ago, people needed me to help them count their yummy berries and sparkly shells. They discovered my trick of giving numbers a special spot, and it made counting big things super easy and fun for everyone.

Today, I am everywhere, helping you. I am there when you count the candles on your birthday cake. I am there when you read the page number in a book, or when you see how many pennies are in your piggy bank. I help make big, tricky numbers feel friendly and easy to understand. With my help, you can count anything you can imagine, no matter how big it is. Every number has a special and important place—just like you.
