Rotation and Revolution

Have you ever wondered why the sun plays peek-a-boo with the world, showing its bright face in the morning and hiding away at night? Or have you ever asked why we have special seasons for building snowmen and other seasons for splashing in a cool pool? It’s because of a secret, cosmic dance that I perform every single moment. It feels like I’m spinning gently, like a top that never gets dizzy, to bring you daytime and nighttime. At the very same time, I am also on a long, long journey, taking a giant step through space for a whole year. I am the secret dance of planet Earth, and you can call me by my two names: Rotation and Revolution.

For thousands of years, people looked up at the sky and thought that the big, bright Sun was the one doing all the moving. From down on the ground, it really looked like the Sun was traveling across the sky each day, and that the Earth was standing perfectly still. It was a good guess, but the real secret was a little trickier. A very curious man named Nicolaus Copernicus spent years and years just watching the stars and planets. He was a stargazer with a big idea. In the year 1543, he wrote in a book that maybe, just maybe, the Earth was the one moving. He thought the Earth was spinning and also traveling around the Sun. Not everyone believed him at first. Then, many years later, another brilliant man named Galileo Galilei got a new invention called a telescope around the year 1610. When he pointed it at the sky, he saw something amazing. He saw tiny moons circling around the planet Jupiter. This was a huge clue. It proved that not everything in the sky moved around the Earth. Galileo's discovery helped show everyone that Copernicus’s big idea was right all along. They had figured out the moves to my dance.

I have two very important jobs that help make life on Earth so special. My first move, which I call Rotation, is my daily spin. This is what gives you a bright day for playing outside and a dark night for cozying up in bed to sleep. I am like a giant clock for the planet, and one full spin takes 24 hours. My second move, which I call Revolution, is my year-long journey around the Sun. Because the Earth is tilted a little bit, like it’s leaning to one side, this long trip creates the four seasons. My dance tells farmers when to plant their seeds, helps animals know when it's time to hibernate for the winter, and marks the time for you to celebrate your birthday each year. I am the steady rhythm of the world. So the next time you see a beautiful sunrise or feel the seasons change from chilly winter to warm spring, you can think of me, the Earth's secret dance.
