The Story of My Many Shapes
Hello there. You see me every single day, but you might not know my name. Sometimes, I am a hard, cold block you find in the freezer, perfect for cooling down your juice. You can even skate on me when I cover a whole lake in winter. Other times, I am a splashy, liquid puddle you can jump right into after a rainstorm. I fill your bathtub and flow from the faucet when you are thirsty. And sometimes, I am a secret. I become an invisible, floaty gas that hisses out of a teapot, tickling your nose with a warm mist. I can be hard, wet, or not there at all. This is the amazing story of my many shapes, the tale of the states of matter.
For thousands of years, people wondered about my secrets. A very long time ago, in a sunny place called Greece, a thinker named Democritus had a brilliant idea. He imagined that everything in the world, including me, was made of teeny-tiny particles that were always wiggling and jiggling around. He thought of them like super small bouncy balls. For a long, long time, that was just a guess. Then, many years later, a curious scientist in France named Antoine Lavoisier decided to find out for sure. He did careful experiments. He watched me as a solid block of ice, then watched me melt into liquid water, and then he watched me turn into a gassy steam. He discovered that even though I was wearing different costumes, I was still the same amount of 'stuff'. My tiny bouncy balls were just changing their dance. When I am a solid, my particles are packed tightly together, like friends in a big group hug, just wiggling in place. When I am a liquid, they have more room to slide and tumble over each other, like kids going down a waterslide. And when I am a gas, they have tons of energy and zoom all over the place.
Now that people understand my secrets, they can use my different shapes to do amazing things. When you eat a delicious, frozen ice cream cone, you are enjoying my solid form. The milk you pour on your cereal is me in my liquid form. And that birthday balloon that floats up to the ceiling? It is filled with me in my gassy form. Because people figured out how I work, they could invent incredible things. They learned that big boats could float on top of my liquid form to cross giant oceans. They discovered that if you heat up my gassy form, it can lift a huge hot air balloon high into the sky. Learning about my secrets helps people create and explore the world. So the next time you see an ice cube melt or steam rise from a hot cocoa, you’ll know the story of my wonderful, shape-shifting adventure.
