Volume

Hello! I am a secret helper you can see every day. I am the space inside your cup that holds your yummy juice. I am the reason your bathtub can fill all the way up for a big, bubbly bath! I am the wiggle room in your toy box that lets you fit all your favorite blocks and dolls inside. You cannot touch me, but I am in everything. Can you guess what I am? I am Volume!

A long, long, long time ago, a very smart man named Archimedes was trying to figure me out. He had a shiny, golden crown and he wanted to know how much space it took up. He thought and thought. He decided to take a nice, warm bath, and when he climbed in, SPLASH! The water in the tub went up, up, up! He saw that his body took up space and pushed the water higher. He put the shiny crown in the water, and it did the very same thing! He was so excited he shouted, 'Eureka!' which means, 'I found it!' He had found a fun way to see me.

I am everywhere you look! When your grown-up measures flour with a cup to bake yummy cookies, they are using me to help. When you pour water from a small cup into a big bucket, you can see me fill up the new space. I am in the big, bouncy ball you play with at the park, and I am in the tiny, little ladybug that lands on your finger. I help everyone know how much of something there is. I am Volume, and I am the amazing space that everything fills up!
