I am Volume

Have you ever tried to fit all your toys into one small box? Or poured juice into a glass right up to the very top? I’m the reason some things fit perfectly, and other times, they spill over! I am the space inside things. I’m in the air that fills up a birthday balloon, making it big and round. I’m in the water that fills a swimming pool, ready for you to splash in. I am everywhere, in everything that takes up space, from a tiny marble to a giant whale. You can see me, feel me, and measure me. I am Volume!

For a long, long time, people saw me but didn't know how to measure me, especially for tricky shapes. That changed over two thousand years ago in a sunny place called Greece. A very smart man named Archimedes was given a puzzle by his king, Hiero II. The king had a beautiful new gold crown but worried the goldsmith had mixed in some cheaper silver. He asked Archimedes to find out the truth without damaging the crown! Archimedes thought and thought. One day, as he stepped into his bathtub for a bath, he saw the water level rise and splash over the side. He realized that the amount of water that spilled out was exactly the same as the space his body took up. He had found me! He shouted, 'Eureka!' which means 'I’ve found it!' He could do the same thing with the crown. By dipping the crown in water, he could measure its volume and figure out if it was pure gold. It was a brilliant discovery that helped everyone understand me better.

Ever since Archimedes had his big idea, understanding me has been super important. When you help your parents bake cookies, you use me! The measuring cups for flour and sugar are all about getting my amount just right. When you drink from a juice box, the box is designed to hold a certain amount of me. Scientists use me to measure liquids in their labs, and engineers use me to figure out how much concrete they need to build a skyscraper or how much fuel a rocket needs to fly to the moon. I help you know how much of something you have, whether it’s a bottle of water or the air you breathe into your lungs. I am the space that makes up our world, and knowing me helps you build, create, and explore everything in it.
