Weathering

Sometimes I tickle your nose with fluffy, white snowflakes. Other times, I splash your boots with pitter-patter rain. I can be sunny and warm, making you want to eat yummy ice cream, or windy and cool, which is perfect for flying a kite high in the sky. I love to paint bright rainbows after a big storm and whisper secrets through the leaves on the tall trees. I am all around you, every single day. Do you know who I am? I am the Weather! It's so nice to meet you.

For a long, long time, people would look up at the sky to guess what I might do next. They saw dark, puffy clouds and knew that rain might be coming to help their little gardens grow big and strong. They felt a cool breeze on their faces and knew it was a good day to sail their boats across the big, blue water. Then, a very smart person named Evangelista Torricelli made a special tool around the year 1643. It was called a barometer, and it helped people know if I was feeling sunny or stormy. It was like a little helper that could listen to my secrets and tell everyone what I was planning!

Today, you know all about me. You can see what I'm doing on a grown-up's phone or on the TV. That helps you decide if you need a bright raincoat, cool sunglasses, or a fuzzy, warm hat for the day. I give you big puddles to splash in, warm sunshine to play in, and soft snow to build friendly snowmen. I am always changing, bringing you new adventures every single day. I love being your friend.
