I Am Anne of Green Gables

Before I had a cover or pages you could turn, I was a happy thought, a little story waiting to be told. I was a whisper about a girl with hair as red as poppies and a heart full of sunshine. This girl lived on a green island with sparkling lakes and red, dusty roads. She loved to imagine big, wonderful things. She was looking for a home where she could belong and a family to love with all her heart. I am the book that tells her story. I am Anne of Green Gables. I am full of her adventures, her daydreams, and all her happy feelings.

A kind woman named Lucy Maud Montgomery brought my story to life. She lived on that beautiful island, called Prince Edward Island, in a country named Canada. She loved the green fields and the blue water, and she put all that beauty inside me. Starting in the spring of 1905, she dipped her pen in ink and filled my pages with adventures, friendships, and happy daydreams. She wrote and wrote, telling everyone about Anne. By June of 1908, my story was complete. I was no longer just an idea. I was a real book with a cover and pages, ready to be shared with the whole world.

From that day on, children and grown-ups opened my cover and met my friend, Anne. They laughed when she did silly things and felt happy when she found a family to love. For more than 100 years, I have been a friend on the bookshelf. I show everyone that it’s wonderful to imagine, to be yourself, and to find the good in every single day. I love sharing Anne's story and making new friends who read my pages. I hope I can be your friend, too.
