The Story of Anne of Green Gables
Before I had pages or a cover, I was a little whisper of an idea, dreaming of a special place. I imagined an island with bright red roads, a lake that sparkled like diamonds, and fields of the greenest green you've ever seen. In my heart, there was a girl with hair as red as carrots and a mind bubbling with big, wonderful words and daydreams. She was looking for a home, a place to belong. I am the story of that girl. I am the book, 'Anne of Green Gables'.
A kind and clever woman named Lucy Maud Montgomery brought me to life. She lived on that very island I dreamed of, a real place called Prince Edward Island in Canada. Around the year 1905, she remembered a little note she had written down about a family who wanted to adopt a boy but got a girl by mistake. That tiny idea was the seed that grew into my whole story. For many months, she sat at her desk, dipping her pen in ink and filling my pages with the adventures of Anne Shirley. She wrote about how Anne arrived at Green Gables and surprised her new family, Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert. She filled me with funny mix-ups, deep friendships, and all of Anne's wonderful, imaginative thoughts. After she wrote my last word, she sent me out into the world. After a few tries, a publisher said yes, and on a sunny day in June of 1908, I was finally printed as a real book for everyone to read.
At first, I was just one book among many. But soon, children and grown-ups started to read about Anne. They laughed at her antics, like accidentally dyeing her hair green, and they felt her joy when she finally found her family. People loved Anne's spirit so much that they wanted more of her stories, and soon I had other books that followed me. My story traveled all across the world, speaking in many different languages. Anne’s adventures even jumped off my pages and onto stages for plays and into movies for everyone to see. Even though I was created over a hundred years ago, I am still here to remind you that imagination is a gift, that being different is wonderful, and that everyone deserves to find a place where they belong. I am more than just paper and ink; I am a friend who whispers that the world is full of beauty and kindred spirits.
