The Story of The Giver

Before you even know my name, you can feel me in your hands. I am quiet and still. My cover hides a big secret inside. Open me up, and my pages whisper when you turn them. Swoosh, swoosh. I hold a whole world inside me. It is a place waiting for bright colors. I am a book, and my name is The Giver. I love to tell stories. I have many, many pages. Each page is a little adventure waiting just for you.

A very thoughtful woman named Lois Lowry created me. She imagined my story. She wrote it down with her pen for everyone to read. That was on April 26th, 1993. She wanted to tell a story about a boy named Jonas. Jonas lived in a world without color or music. Everything was the same. But one day, Jonas started to see the color red. It was bright like a shiny apple. Wow. He learned about warm sunshine. He learned about happy feelings. He even learned about sad feelings, which are important too. Lois wanted my story to show how wonderful it is to have all our different feelings and memories. They make our world so special.

Today, children and grown-ups read my pages. They think about the beautiful things in their own world. I help them notice the bright colors of a rainbow. I help them hear the music in a happy song. I help them feel the warmth of a hug. I am a story that reminds you that every memory is special. Every feeling is special. And every color is a special treasure that makes your life so, so wonderful.
