The Hobbit: A Story's Adventure
Before you even know my name, you might see me sitting on a shelf. I have a sturdy cover, and inside, my pages are filled with little black shapes called words. If you look closely, you might see a drawing of a mountain or a dragon! I hold a whole world inside me, a secret place of adventure waiting for a friend to open me up and peek inside. I am the book called The Hobbit. I love it when little hands turn my pages and discover the magic I hold. I am not just paper and ink. I am a doorway to a land of wonder.
A kind man with a big imagination made me. His name was J. R. R. Tolkien, and he loved telling stories to his children. One day, a long, long time ago, around the year 1930, he found a blank piece of paper. On that paper, he wrote my very first words: “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.” He kept writing and writing. He filled my pages with a small, brave hero named Bilbo Baggins. He also added a wise wizard, some funny dwarves, and a grumpy dragon named Smaug. He made me a story all about a great, big adventure to find treasure.
On a special day, September 21st, 1937, my story was shared with children all over the world. They could open my cover and travel with Bilbo to far-off lands without ever leaving their cozy chairs. I love to show everyone that even if you feel very small, you can be very brave and do big things. For many, many years, I have been making new friends who love to read about magic and friendship. I hope my story makes you wonder what fun adventures you might have, too!
