Neil Armstrong: My Trip to the Moon

Hello there. My name is Neil Armstrong, and I was an astronaut. That is a special kind of explorer who travels into outer space. I got to go on the biggest trip you can imagine, a trip all the way to the Moon. My friends, Buzz and Michael, came with me. We prepared for our adventure by climbing into our super tall rocket ship, the Saturn V. It was taller than the biggest building. Before we could go, we had to put on our special space suits. They were puffy and white, like big marshmallows, and we wore big bubble helmets so we could breathe. We were so excited to fly.

On a sunny day, July 16th, 1969, it was time to go. WHOOSH. Our rocket ship started to shake and rumble. It was a very bumpy ride at first, pushing us up, up, up into the sky. Soon, the ride became smooth and quiet. We were in space. We unbuckled our seatbelts and we could float. It felt like swimming in the air. I looked out the little window of our spaceship, which we called the Eagle. I saw our home, the planet Earth, getting smaller and smaller. It looked like a beautiful blue and white marble spinning in the dark. We traveled through the starry sky for a few days to get to the Moon.

Finally, we made it. On July 20th, 1969, our spaceship landed gently on the Moon. It was so quiet and still. I opened the door and looked out at a new world. The ground was gray and covered in soft dust. I carefully climbed down the ladder. My big white boot touched the ground, and I took the very first step. I said some special words: "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." It meant that my little step was a big step for everyone back on Earth. We planted a flag to show we had visited, and we bounced around. It showed everyone that if you dream big and work together, you can do amazing things, even walk on the Moon.
