Captain John Smith's Big Adventure
Hello, my name is Captain John Smith. I love big adventures. One time, I went on a very, very long trip across a big, blue ocean. It was a long, long time ago. We sailed on three small ships that bobbed up and down on the waves. Whoosh. The wind pushed our sails and helped us go. For many days, all we could see was water, water, and more water. It was exciting. We sang songs and looked for fish in the deep water. Then one sunny morning, on May 14th, 1607, someone shouted, 'Land.'. I looked and saw it too. It was a beautiful new land. I felt so happy in my heart. Wow. Tall, green trees reached up to the bright blue sky like they were saying hello. A big, shiny river sparkled in the sun, inviting us to come explore. It was the start of a brand new adventure for all of us, in a brand new place.
We needed a place to live, so we started to build a new town. We called it Jamestown. It was hard work. We used our strong arms to chop wood. Tap, tap, tap went our axes. We built cozy log houses and a strong fort to keep us safe. But soon, our tummies started to rumble. We needed to find good food to eat in this new home. One day, we met some new friends. They were the Powhatan people, and they knew all about the land. A kind and brave girl named Pocahontas became our special friend. She smiled and showed us how to plant tiny corn seeds in the soft dirt. We watched the little green sprouts grow into tall corn stalks. We learned that working together and helping each other makes everything better. Making new friends like Pocahontas and the Powhatan people was the very best part of our adventure. I grew old and passed away, but our town of Jamestown showed that people can build a new home and make new friends when they are brave and kind.
