The Story of the Digital Thermometer
Hello. Beep. I am a digital thermometer. It is my special job to tell you if your body is feeling warm or cool. I am very fast and very safe. When I am done with my job, I make a happy little beep sound to let you know. Before I came along, the old thermometers were made of glass. They took a long, long time to work and sometimes they could break, which was not safe at all. But I am here to help quickly and safely. I love my job. It is so important to me.
I was created a long, long time ago, on a special day in 1954. My clever inventors, David Phillips and Robert T. Brawner, had a wonderful idea. They wanted to make a thermometer that was super fast and much safer for everyone, especially for children just like you. They knew that waiting when you do not feel well is no fun at all. So, they used smart electronics to make me work. I have a little tip that feels the warmth and a screen that shows numbers. My screen is like a tiny TV. There was no more waiting and no more worrying about broken glass. I was ready to help.
Today, I have a very important job in your home. When a grown-up uses me, I take a quick measurement under your arm or in your mouth. Then, when I have the answer, I happily go 'Beep.'. That little sound is my way of saying, 'All done.'. This helps parents and doctors know if you need extra snuggles, a cool drink, or some medicine to help you feel better. I love helping to keep everyone healthy and safe with my quick and happy beeps. It makes me feel very proud to be your helpful friend.
