My Story: The Friendly Pencil
Hello, I am a pencil. I love to draw and write with you. Way down deep inside my belly, I have a special gray core. It is called graphite. A very, very long time ago, people found my graphite deep in the ground. They picked up little pieces of it and started to draw. But oh, it was so messy. The gray graphite got all over their fingers, making them look smudgy and dusty. It was fun to make marks, but their hands always needed a big wash afterward.
Then, a very clever person had a wonderful idea. They thought my graphite core needed a cozy little house to live in. So, they took two skinny pieces of wood and snuggled my graphite right in between them, like a little bed. They gave me a cozy wooden coat. I was so happy and warm. This is how I was born. Now, people could hold me easily, and their fingers stayed nice and clean. I was ready to help everyone write and draw without making a big, smudgy mess.
My story gets even better. One day, on March 30th, 1858, I got a best friend. A little pink eraser came to live on my other end, like a happy little hat. Now we are a team. If you draw a line that goes a little too wiggly, whoops. My eraser friend can help you fix it. We love helping you share your big, bright ideas. You can draw a sunshine, a flower, or write your name. I am so proud to help your amazing pictures and words come out to play for the whole world to see.
