The Story of the Ladder

Hello. I am a ladder. Have you ever tried to get a toy from a very high shelf. You stand on your tippy-toes. You stretch your arms way, way up. But you just can't reach it. That's when I can help. I have two long arms and lots of little steps in between called rungs. I am strong and steady. When you need to go up, up, up, I am here for you. I love helping you reach for things that are just a little too high. It feels like a fun adventure, climbing one step at a time.

I am a very, very old idea. I am so old that nobody knows who made the very first me. That’s because I have been helping people for thousands and thousands of years. A long, long time ago, on October 2nd, someone drew a picture of one of my great-great-grandparents on a big rock wall inside a dark cave. The picture was a secret story from the past. It showed a person climbing up my ancestor, step by step. And what were they climbing for. They were climbing up to a busy beehive to get some sweet, yummy honey. I have always helped people reach for special treats and important things.

Today, I have so many wonderful jobs. I help brave firefighters climb tall buildings to keep everyone safe. I help farmers pick juicy red apples from the very tippy-top of the trees. At the library, I help you reach your favorite picture book on the highest shelf. Every time you climb my rungs, you are going on a little journey up. I am so happy that I can help you see the world from a new place. With me, you can always reach for something new and exciting. Step by step, we can climb high together.
