The Story of the LEGO Brick

Hello there. I bet you know who I am. I’m a colorful, bumpy LEGO brick. But did you know I wasn’t always made of shiny plastic? My story started a long, long time ago in a little wooden toy shop. It was in a town called Billund, in a country named Denmark. A wonderful man named Ole Kirk Christiansen was my creator. He was a carpenter, which means he was very good at making things out of wood. In 1932, he started his own company making beautiful wooden toys like ducks and cars. He loved his wooden toys, but he had a big dream. He wanted to create a toy that could be built into anything a child could imagine. He just didn't know how to do it yet.

Everything changed after a big war ended. Around 1947, Ole saw a special machine that could make things out of plastic. He was so excited. He thought, 'Maybe this is it.'. So, in 1949, the very first plastic version of me was born. I was called an 'Automatic Binding Brick,' which is a very long name. I had my happy little bumps, called studs, on top, but I had a problem. When you stacked me with my friends, we would fall apart easily. I felt a little sad about that. But then, Ole’s son, Godtfred, had a super smart idea. He said that toys needed a 'system' so kids could build anything they dreamed of without it tumbling down. So he worked and worked, and on a very important day, January 28th, 1958, he gave me my secret power. He added little tubes on my inside. 'Click.'. That was the sound I made. This wonderful click helped me hold on tight to my friends, but I was still easy to pull apart when you wanted to build something new.

That special 'click' changed the world for me and for kids everywhere. It was my super-power. Now, you could build tall, tall towers that reached for the sky, speedy spaceships that zoomed to the moon, and cozy castles for kings and queens, and they wouldn't fall down. The most magical part is that a brick like me, made way back on that special day in 1958, can still click perfectly together with a brand new brick made today. We all fit. I love watching you build with me and all my colorful brick friends. Every time you click us together, you're not just building a toy. You are building a whole new story and making your wonderful imagination come to life.
