The Story of the Thermos
Hello. I am a Thermos. I have a very special job. My job is to keep your yummy soup warm and your cold juice chilly. I love my job. A very smart and kind scientist named Sir James Dewar made me. It was a happy surprise. He was working in his laboratory with things that were very, very cold, and suddenly, he had an idea for me. He wanted to make something that could keep things at just the right temperature for a long, long time, and I was the perfect helper for that special task.
Sir James Dewar needed a special bottle. He wanted to keep his super cold liquids from getting warm. It was a big puzzle. Around the year 1892, he had a wonderful idea. He took one shiny glass bottle and put it right inside another, bigger glass bottle. It was like the little bottle was getting a big hug from the bigger bottle. Then, he did something that felt like magic. He took all of the air out from the empty space between the two bottles. This empty space is my big secret. It stops the warm from getting in and the cold from getting out. It works like a secret shield. And just like that, I was born. I was so excited to start my new job of keeping things just right.
At first, I only stayed in the quiet laboratory with Sir James Dewar. But soon, other people saw how helpful I could be for everyone. In the year 1904, I got my very own special name. They called me 'Thermos'. I also got a strong, sturdy case so I would be safe on big adventures. I was finally ready to go out and see the big, wide world. Now, I get to go with you to the park or to school. I keep your soup warm for your lunch and your juice cool on a sunny day. I love helping you have yummy treats wherever you go. It makes me feel so happy and proud.
