The Story of the Vacuum Cleaner
Hello there. I am a friendly vacuum cleaner. Long, long ago, before I was around, cleaning was a very dusty job. People used brooms to sweep, sweep, sweep. But the yucky dust didn't go away. It just flew up into the air and tickled everyone's noses. It made people say, “Achoo.”. Fluffy dust bunnies would hide under the beds and chairs, making everything feel messy. The world needed a new friend to help make houses clean and cozy without all the sneezes. I was waiting for a big idea to help me come to life and start my job.
One day, a very clever man named Hubert Cecil Booth had a wonderful, brilliant idea. It happened on a special day, August 30th, 1901. He saw a machine trying to blow dust away from a chair and thought, “That just makes a bigger mess.”. He had a better idea. Instead of blowing dust away, why not suck it up. So, he made me. At first, I was very, very big and very, very loud. VROOOM. I was so big I had to ride on a cart outside. A long, long hose would stretch into the house to say hello. It looked just like a friendly elephant's trunk. I would slurp up all the dust and dirt through my long trunk. It was my favorite game to play.
As time went on, I changed and became smaller and smaller. Soon, I was small enough to live right inside the house with you. Now I am your little helper, ready to play. Vroom, vroom. I love to gobble up the little crumbs you drop during snack time. I happily chase the dusty bunnies out from under the sofa. It is my special job to make the floor feel nice and clean for your toys and your feet. I am so happy that I can help keep your home a cozy and wonderful place for you to play all day long.
