The Story of the Video Game

Hello there. My name is Video Game. You might know me as a world of colorful adventures, fast race cars, and tricky puzzles, but I wasn't always this way. I started my life as a tiny, bouncing dot of light on a small screen. My very first friend was a kind scientist named William Higinbotham. He brought me to life in his big science laboratory on October 18th, 1958. He wasn't trying to change the world. He just wanted to make the visitor day at his lab a little more exciting for everyone. He thought, “What if I could make something fun and interactive for people to enjoy?” and that’s when my little light started to glow. I was a simple tennis game, just a dot bouncing back and forth over a line, but I was the beginning of something magical.

On that first day, people lined up to meet me. They had never seen anything like me before. Their eyes grew wide with excitement as they turned little knobs and pushed buttons to control my bouncing dot. With a 'boop' and a 'bleep', they would hit my light-ball over the net to their friend. Everyone was laughing and cheering. I felt so happy making them smile. My creator’s simple, fun idea planted a seed. Other smart people saw how much joy I could bring and started creating new versions of me. A game called Pong came along in 1972, and suddenly I was in arcades where friends could gather and play. Then, something even more amazing happened. I got to go home with people. Special boxes called consoles were made, which let families plug me right into their televisions. From a science lab, to an arcade, to living rooms all over the world, I was growing up and making new friends everywhere I went.

Now, look at what I’ve become. I am not just one game anymore. I am millions of games. I can take you on an adventure to a magical castle, let you build an entire city out of blocks, or help you solve a mystery with your friends. I can even connect you with other players who live on the other side of the world, so you can play and build friendships together. It all started with a scientist who wanted to share the joy of science in a fun way. That one little bouncing dot of light showed everyone that a simple idea, meant to make people happy, can grow into a whole universe of fun, imagination, and friendship for everyone to share.
