Anansi and the Moss-Covered Rock

Hello there. My name is Little Bush Deer, and I live deep in the warm, sunny jungle where the trees are so tall they tickle the clouds. One morning, while I was nibbling on some sweet berries, I saw something very peculiar. It was a big, gray rock covered in soft, green moss, and it seemed... quiet. Too quiet. Just then, I heard a little chuckle from the leaves above and knew exactly who it was: Anansi the Spider, the cleverest trickster in all the land. I had a feeling that rock was part of one of his schemes, and this is the story of what happened next, the tale of Anansi and the Moss-Covered Rock.

Anansi had discovered a secret. If anyone walked by the rock and said, 'Isn't this a strange moss-covered rock?', they would fall fast asleep. Anansi, who loved to eat but didn't love to work, decided this was the perfect way to get a free lunch. First, he saw Lion walking by with a big bunch of bananas. Anansi walked with him and pointed to the rock. 'My, my,' said Lion, 'Isn't this a strange moss-covered rock?'. Thump. Lion fell asleep, and Anansi took all his bananas. Next came Elephant with a basket of juicy mangoes. Anansi did the same trick, and soon he had Elephant's mangoes, too. I watched from behind a bush as Anansi tricked animal after animal. He was getting quite a pile of yummy food, but it wasn't fair. I knew someone had to be cleverer than the clever spider.

I decided it was my turn. I gathered some sweet yams and started walking past Anansi. 'Hello, Little Bush Deer.' he said with a grin. 'Let me help you with those.'. He led me right to the moss-covered rock. He kept pointing and hinting, but I pretended I didn't see it. 'What rock?' I asked. He got frustrated. 'The one right there.' he shouted, pointing with all eight of his legs. 'Isn't this a strange moss-covered rock?'. As soon as the words left his mouth, thump. Anansi fell fast asleep. While he snored, I gathered all the stolen food and returned it to Lion, Elephant, and everyone else. They all cheered for me, the little deer who outsmarted the trickster. Anansi learned that day that being clever is no good if you're not also kind. This story has been told by families in West Africa for hundreds of years to teach children that you don't have to be the biggest or strongest to solve a problem—sometimes, all you need is a quick mind and a good heart. And even today, when people tell stories about being smart and fair, they are sharing a little bit of the magic from Anansi's moss-covered rock.
