The Tortoise and the Hare
Hello there. My name is Tortoise, and my shell is my cozy home that I carry everywhere. One bright, sunny morning in a green meadow in ancient Greece, all the animals gathered to listen to Hare brag about how fast he was. He could dash faster than the wind. I just kept munching on a tasty clover, moving very, very slowly, which made Hare laugh and call me a slowpoke. He zipped around me in circles, showing off and kicking up little bits of grass. "You are the slowest creature I have ever seen," he chuckled. "I bet you've never even left this part of the meadow." That's when a little idea popped into my head, an idea that would become the famous story of The Tortoise and the Hare.
I was tired of Hare's boasting, so I looked up from my clover and said in my calmest voice, "I will race you." All the other animals gasped. A little field mouse squeaked in surprise. How could a slow tortoise like me ever beat a speedy hare? Hare laughed so hard he almost fell over. "You? Race me? That's the funniest thing I've ever heard." But he agreed to the race because he thought it would be an easy win. The next day, the wise old Owl hooted to start the race. ZOOM. Hare shot off like an arrow, leaving me in a cloud of dust before I had even taken my third step. He was so far ahead in just a few minutes that he couldn't even see me anymore. Feeling very proud and a little sleepy from the warm sun, Hare decided he had plenty of time for a quick nap under a shady tree. "I'll rest here," he thought. "Even if that slowpoke passes me, I can wake up and beat him easily." Meanwhile, I just kept going, one steady step after another. I didn't stop to rest or look around. I just kept my eyes on the path ahead, thinking, 'Slow and steady, slow and steady.'
While Hare was dreaming of winning his trophy, I plodded right past him. He was snoring so loudly under the big oak tree that he didn't even twitch an ear as I went by. I walked and walked, never giving up, even when my legs felt tired and the path seemed very long. After a while, I could see the finish line in the distance. The other animals, who had gathered to watch, saw me coming. They started cheering quietly at first, then louder and louder. "Go, Tortoise, go." The noise finally woke Hare from his deep sleep. He blinked his eyes and saw me, just about to cross the finish line. Hare leaped up and ran as fast as he could, his feet a blur on the dirt path, but it was too late. I took one final, steady step and crossed the finish line first. The animals lifted me onto their shoulders, cheering for the winner who never gave up. Hare learned a very important lesson that day: being fast isn't everything, and it's not smart to underestimate anyone.
