The Land of Joyful Songs
Can you feel the warm sun on your skin and hear the chattering of monkeys in a giant green forest. Brightly colored birds fly through my trees, and a giant river twists and turns like a long, sleepy snake. If you walk a little farther, you can wiggle your toes in my warm, sandy beaches while the ocean waves sing a soft song. In my big cities, happy music fills the air, and people are always ready to smile and dance. I am a land of wonders, filled with life and color from my deepest jungles to my sparkling shores. Can you guess who I am. I am Brazil.
My story is very, very long, and it began a long time ago with my first friends, the Indigenous people like the Tupi. They lived in my rainforests, knew the secrets of my rivers, and took great care of me. They listened to my whispers and lived in harmony with my animals and plants. Then one day, everything changed. On April 22nd, 1500, big wooden ships with tall white sails appeared on the water. A Portuguese explorer named Pedro Álvares Cabral arrived on my shores. He and his men were amazed by everything they saw. They found a special tree with wood as red as a glowing coal. They called it the Brazilwood tree, and from that day on, that became my name. Soon, more people came from far away lands like Portugal and Africa. They brought their own songs, their own foods, and their own stories. We all mixed together, like colors in a painting, to create something new and beautiful. For a long time, I was ruled by another country, but my heart wanted to be free. On September 7th, 1822, I proudly stood on my own and became an independent country.
Today, my life is a big celebration. The best party in the world happens right here. It is called Carnival. For days, the streets fill with music so loud it feels like a giant heartbeat. People wear amazing costumes with feathers and sparkles, and they dance the samba until their feet are tired but their hearts are full. I am also famous for my love of soccer. When there is a game, everyone stops to watch and cheer. It feels like the whole country is one big team. High on a mountain in my city of Rio de Janeiro, a giant statue with open arms watches over everyone. He is called Christ the Redeemer, and he welcomes every visitor with love, reminding them that my arms are always open, too.
My greatest gift to the world is my spirit. I am a country made from the stories of the Tupi people, the explorers from Portugal, the strong people from Africa, and so many others from all over the globe. All of their voices joined together to make one beautiful song. My story teaches everyone that mixing different cultures together doesn't hide them, it makes something even more wonderful. So come visit me, listen to my music, and feel my joy. I promise to share my sunshine with you.
