The Sea of Many Stories
Imagine a warm, watery hug that wraps around hundreds of beautiful islands. My waters are so clear and blue that you can see right through to the sandy bottom. All day long, the sun tickles my surface, making me sparkle like a giant jewel. Below my waves, tiny, colorful fish dart back and forth like bright confetti, and gentle sea turtles glide through my currents as if they are dancing. I am a safe and happy home for so much life. My sandy shores welcome children to build magnificent sandcastles and splash in my gentle waves. Do you know who I am? I am the Caribbean Sea, and I have so many stories to tell you.
For a very, very long time, I have watched people travel across my waters. The first people to know me were the Taíno and Carib peoples. They were incredible sailors who paddled from island to island in amazing canoes they carved from trees. They fished in my waters and sang songs that the wind carried across my waves. Then, one day, something new appeared on the horizon. Much bigger ships with giant white sails floated toward my islands. On October 12th, 1492, an explorer named Christopher Columbus arrived from far across the ocean. He and his sailors were amazed by my beauty. His arrival brought many new people to my shores, and it was the beginning of big changes for my islands. After that, my waves saw a time of great adventure. Pirate ships began to sail on me, flying flags with skulls and crossbones. Famous pirates like Blackbeard steered their ships through my waters, searching for chests filled with gold and jewels. Their exciting stories are still told by people who visit my islands today.
Now, the treasure people look for in my waters has changed. It’s not gold coins anymore, but something even more precious and alive. My greatest treasures are my amazing coral reefs. They are like busy, colorful cities under the sea, filled with homes for fish, crabs, seahorses, and octopuses. I feel so proud to protect them. I connect so many different islands, where people speak different languages, play lively music that makes you want to dance, and cook the most delicious food. Families come from all over the world to swim in my warm water, listen to the gentle rhythm of my waves lapping the shore, and marvel at the wonderful creatures that call me home. I hold the stories of the past and the promise of sunny days to come, and I will always be here to connect people with the wonders of nature and with each other.
