A Secret Island Friend
I am a giant, green island floating in the warm, blue Indian Ocean. My soil is a special reddish color, and giant trees with fat trunks reach for the sun. I am a secret home to animals you can’t find anywhere else. I am the island of Madagascar.
A very, very long time ago, before there were people, I broke away from a big piece of land and floated all by myself. For a long, long time, I was quiet. Then, around the year 500, brave explorers sailed across the ocean in big canoes and became the first people to live here. They discovered my amazing forests and funny animals.
Because I was alone for so long, my animals are extra special. I have lemurs with big, bright eyes that leap through the trees. I have chameleons that can change their colors like a rainbow. My forests are filled with fluffy moths that look like comets and tall baobab trees that look like they are upside down. Everything here is a little bit magical.
Today, people from all over the world come to visit me. They hike through my forests and say hello to my lemurs. It makes me happy to share my wonders. By learning about me and taking care of my special creatures, you help keep my magic alive for everyone to enjoy, forever and ever.
