The Story of the Splashy, Thundering Water
Rooooar. Can you hear me. I am very loud and very splashy. I make a big, cool mist that tickles your nose and makes your hair damp. I am a giant watery curtain that never, ever stops falling. Splish, splash, all day and all night. When the sun comes out to play, rainbows love to dance in my mist. They are so bright and colorful. I love when the sun shines on me and makes everything sparkle. I am a happy, noisy place full of wonderful water. Do you know who I am. I am the mighty, splashy Niagara Falls.
A very long, long time ago, I was just a sleepy, icy place. The world was covered in a giant, chilly blanket of ice. This was about 12,000 years ago. Then, the sun came out and warmed everything up. The big blanket of ice started to melt, drip, drop, drip. All that melting water needed somewhere to go. It wiggled and giggled and carved a special path just for me. The first people to see me were so amazed. They were the Indigenous peoples. They heard my loud roar and called me ‘thundering water’. I think that is the perfect name for me.
Today, so many friends come to visit me. They wear colorful coats and wave from little boats that bob up and down in my mist. Hello, little boats. My water is very strong. It works hard to make sparkly energy to light up your homes and make your toys go. I am a special place full of wonder. I am here to show everyone how powerful and beautiful water can be. Rooooar.
