The Empire's Giant Hug
Imagine a giant hug of land all around a sparkly blue sea. In this big family of places, there were sunny fields where yummy food grew and busy towns full of friends. Long, straight roads stretched out like ribbons, connecting everyone together. You could see big ships with white sails gliding across the water, carrying surprises from one town to another. You could hear people chattering and laughing in many different ways. I loved holding all these places together, keeping them safe and happy. I am the Roman Empire.
My heart was a busy, happy city called Rome. The people who lived there, the Roman people, were very clever builders. They built strong stone roads so friends and families could visit each other easily, no matter how far away they lived. They also built amazing water bridges, called aqueducts, that carried fresh, clean water from the mountains right into the towns. Everyone had water to drink and to splash in on a hot day. A kind leader named Augustus helped me grow big and peaceful a long, long time ago, starting around the year 27 BCE. He helped make sure everyone felt safe and happy.
Today, I am not a giant empire anymore, but my story is still all around you like a happy secret. Some of the words you use every day came from my special language, called Latin. Other big languages, like Spanish and French, grew from my words, like flowers growing from tiny seeds. My story is like a secret ingredient in the world today, helping build new things and connect new friends.
