The Whispering Sands of the Sahara
I am a giant, warm blanket of sand that stretches farther than your eyes can see. The bright sun is my friend, warming my golden shoulders all day long. When the wind comes to visit, it whispers secrets as it sculpts my dunes into beautiful, wavy shapes, like giant sandy hills. I am so big that I touch many different countries, and I am so quiet you can almost hear your own heartbeat. At night, the hot sun goes to sleep, and I wear a sparkling cloak made of millions and millions of stars. Have you guessed who I am yet? I am the great Sahara Desert.
Believe it or not, I have a big secret. A very long time ago, from about 11,000 to 5,000 years ago, I was not a sandy desert at all. I was a beautiful, green world. Imagine me covered in tall, swaying grass with big, sparkling lakes and rivers that flowed all year round. Happy hippos would splash and play in my cool waters, and graceful giraffes would nibble on the leaves of tall trees. People lived here then, too. The ancient rock artists saw all this wonder and painted pictures of their lives right onto my rocks. If you look closely today, you can still find their paintings of hunters and amazing animals. But then, something happened. Our whole world tilted just a little bit, like a spinning top wobbling. The rain clouds slowly drifted away, and over thousands of years, my green grass turned to golden sand. I became the desert I am today. But people are clever. They learned to live with me in a new way. Brave travelers, like the Tuareg people, became my friends. They learned to read the stars like a map to find their way across my vast sands. They would say, 'The stars will guide us.' They led long, long lines of strong camels, which they called the 'ships of the desert,' on incredible journeys. These camels carried precious things like salt and shiny gold from one side of me to the other.
Even though I look very dry, I am still buzzing with life. If you watch carefully, you might see a clever fennec fox with giant ears, listening for little snacks hiding under the sand. You will definitely see strong camels, with their long eyelashes, carrying new friends on exciting adventures across my dunes. People come from all over the world just to see my amazing sunsets. I love to show off, painting the whole sky in fiery orange, bright pink, and soft purple. I am a great teacher. I show everyone that our world is always changing, and that's okay. I teach that even in the quietest and toughest-looking places, there is so much beauty and life waiting to be found. So I will always be here, a giant golden sandbox under a huge sky, waiting for curious explorers like you to discover my secrets and dream big dreams under my sparkling stars.
