The Stone Dragon's Tale
I wake up feeling like a long, sleeping dragon made of stone. My spine stretches over the tops of jagged mountains, my tail dips into green valleys, and my head rests near the wide, blue sea. For thousands of years, I have felt the sun warm my stone scales in the morning and watched the stars twinkle above me like a blanket of diamonds at night. I have felt the wind whistle through my watchtowers and the soft footsteps of guards walking along my back. I am so long that if you started walking from one end of me to the other, it would take you more than a year to finish! I am a great ribbon of stone and earth, winding my way across an entire country, a silent guardian who has seen dynasties rise and fall. Can you guess who I am?
I am the Great Wall of China. My story began a very, very long time ago. Before I was one giant wall, China was made up of many separate kingdoms, and each one built small walls to protect itself. But then, around the year 221 BCE, a powerful emperor named Qin Shi Huang united all the kingdoms into one country. He had a grand idea: to connect all the little walls into one massive protector. He wanted me to guard his people and their homes from raiding groups who would sweep in from the north. I wasn’t built to keep friends out, but to create a safe place for families to live and farm. Building me was not a job for one person, or even a hundred. It took millions of hands! Over many centuries, through different ruling families called dynasties, countless soldiers, farmers, and builders worked together. They carried heavy stones, pounded earth into strong bricks, and carefully placed them one by one. They worked under the hot sun and in the freezing cold, their teamwork slowly making me grow longer and stronger, a testament to their incredible effort.
My watchtowers are like my eyes, standing tall on the highest hilltops so I can see for miles. For centuries, brave soldiers lived inside them, always on the lookout. Their job was to watch for danger on the horizon. If they spotted an enemy approaching, they wouldn't shout. Instead, they would light a fire. The thick smoke would rise into the sky, creating a signal. The soldiers in the next tower would see it and light their own fire, and so on, and so on. The message would travel down my back, tower to tower, faster than the swiftest horse could gallop, warning everyone to get ready. The most famous and sturdy parts of me that you can still see today were built during the Ming Dynasty, between 1368 and 1644. The builders used strong bricks and stone, making me taller and wider than ever before. I didn't just see soldiers, though. I watched over the famous Silk Road, seeing long lines of traders with their camels loaded with silks, spices, and treasures, traveling safely in my shadow.
My days as a fortress are now over. The world has changed, and I no longer need to watch for smoke signals or listen for the marching feet of armies. But I have a new, wonderful purpose. I am no longer a barrier that separates people; I have become a bridge that connects them. Every day, I feel the happy footsteps of visitors from every corner of the world. They walk along my back, their voices filled with wonder as they take pictures and share stories. I am a proud symbol of strength, teamwork, and history. I stand to remind everyone that even the biggest challenges can be overcome when people work together, and that a wall built to protect can become a treasure for the whole world to share.
