The Moon's Big Hello

Look up, up, up into the night sky. Do you see a big, friendly light smiling down at you. Sometimes I am a full, round circle, like a giant pearl. Other times, I am just a little silver sliver, like a banana in the sky. I glow softly to keep you company when it’s dark outside. I love to watch over you while you sleep. I am the Moon, and I am the Earth’s best friend. I sparkle and shine just for you. It’s so nice to meet you. I love when you wave goodnight to me. I always wave back with my gentle, sleepy light.

For a long, long, long time, people on Earth looked up at me and dreamed. They wished they could build a ladder tall enough to come and say hello. They wondered what it was like to jump on my soft, dusty ground. Then, one very special day, a big, shiny rocket ship came to visit me. It was called Apollo 11. It flew all the way from Earth just to see me. Two brave friends came out to play. Their names were Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. It was so exciting. On July 20th, 1969, they bounced on me. Boing. Boing. Boing. They left the very first footprints on my surface, and I will keep them safe forever. I was so happy to have visitors.

I still watch over you every single night. I love to see your little faces looking up at me from your windows. I am here to remind you to dream very big dreams. Just like the people who dreamed of visiting me, your dreams can take you anywhere you want to go. So when you see me smiling in the sky, remember to dream, explore, and wonder. Your biggest adventures are just beginning. Goodnight, little dreamers.
