Leonardo da Vinci: The Boy Who Painted Dreams
Hello! My name is Leonardo. A long, long time ago, in the year 1452, I was born in a beautiful town called Vinci. I loved living in the countryside. I would run through the green grass and watch the birds soar high in the big blue sky. I always wondered, how do they fly? I carried a little notebook and a pencil with me everywhere I went. I drew everything I saw—a fluffy cloud, a swirly stream of water, or a tiny buzzing bee. The world was full of wonderful things, and I wanted to understand all of it. I was a very curious boy, always asking questions.
When I was a boy, I moved to a big, busy city called Florence. I went to work in a special workshop with a kind teacher named Andrea del Verrocchio. He taught me how to be an artist! It was so much fun. My favorite job was mixing the colorful paints. I would take red, yellow, and blue powders and stir them up until they looked like shiny, magic potions. One day, my teacher was working on a big painting and he asked me to paint a small angel in the corner. I made my angel look very soft and gentle. When my teacher saw it, he was so surprised! He said it looked so real. That made me feel very proud and happy.
Painting was wonderful, but my mind was always buzzing with other ideas too! I loved to invent things. In my notebooks, I drew all my amazing dreams. I watched bats fly with their leathery wings and drew my own flying machine. I hoped that one day, people could soar through the air just like birds. I also painted one of the most famous pictures in the whole world. It is a portrait of a lady with a gentle, secret smile. Her name is the Mona Lisa. I didn’t just want to paint what people looked like on the outside; I wanted to show their happy and thoughtful feelings on the inside, too.
I grew to be an old man, and my life was full of art and discovery. Even though I lived a long, long time ago, my ideas are still alive today. My paintings, like the Mona Lisa, are in big museums for everyone to see, and my notebooks are filled with dreams that still make people wonder. Always remember to be curious. Ask lots of questions, draw the pictures you see in your mind, and look at the world with a happy heart. You might discover something amazing!
