Beluga the Sea Canary
Hi there. My name is Beluga. I am a beluga whale, and I live in the chilly, sparkly waters of the Arctic Ocean. A long time ago, in the year 1776, people learned about my family. My friends and I love to talk to each other. We make so many sounds—chirps, clicks, and whistles. That’s why some people call me the 'sea canary,' just like a little singing bird of the sea.
When I was a baby, I wasn't white at all. I was a soft, gray color. As I grew bigger and bigger, my skin turned bright white. My special white coat helps me hide from polar bears when I swim near the floating ice. It’s like I’m playing a game of hide-and-seek in the snow.
Beluga whales often travel in groups called pods, which can vary in size from a few individuals to several hundred. We swim together, play together, and hunt for yummy fish to eat. We all work together to keep our ocean home happy and healthy. By being here, I help make the big, blue sea a wonderful place for everyone.
