Balaena the Blue Whale's Big Story
Hi there! My name is Balaena, and I'm a blue whale. I'm not just any whale; I'm the biggest animal that has ever lived on our planet! It's true. Imagine three big school buses parked end-to-end, and that's how long I am. My heart is super big too, about the size of a small golf cart. Can you believe it? I was born in the warm, sunny waters of the ocean. Right away, my mom was there to help me. She taught me everything I needed to know, like how to swim through the big blue sea and how to come up to the surface to breathe air.
Even though I'm huge, my favorite food is one of the smallest creatures in the sea. They are tiny, shrimp-like animals called krill. You might wonder how a giant like me eats something so small. Well, I don't have teeth like you do. Instead, I have special plates in my mouth called baleen. My baleen works like a giant strainer. I swim into a big cloud of krill and take a huge gulp of water. Then, I push all the water out, and the yummy krill stay behind for my lunch! I also love to sing. My songs are deep, rumbly sounds that can travel for hundreds of miles under the water. It's how I talk to my family and other blue whales, even when they are very far away.
For a long time, my family and I were in trouble. People in big ships hunted us, and it was a very sad time. There were not many blue whales left in the ocean. But then, something wonderful happened that changed everything for us. In the year 1966, people from all over the world decided that blue whales needed to be protected. They made a special rule that said no one could hunt us anymore. That was a very important year for all blue whales.
Thanks to those kind people, my family is slowly growing bigger and stronger. Now, I have a very important job to do in the ocean! You might think it's funny, but my poop is like a super vitamin for the ocean. It helps tiny plants called phytoplankton grow. These little plants are food for the krill I love to eat, and for many other animals too. But that's not all! The phytoplankton also make the air that we all breathe. I'm so proud to be a giant helper, swimming through the sea and keeping our beautiful blue ocean healthy for everyone.
